In April of 2021, I created an Instagram post that butter baker is open for soft serve season. The dessert spot offers seasonal flavours every month that you have to check their Instagram account on what they'll introducing every month. For me, Mango, Black Cherry and Strawberry are the flavours I'm excited to have again. My favourite part is visiting Butter baker during my lunch break to have that perfect swirl as a nice treat for myself, especially on a hot summer day. As part of my Instagram post, I prompted a question, "Has anyone tried every season flavour in one summer"? So, I started this journey to visit Butter baker for the summer season attempt to try every soft serve ice cream until it ends. My expectations flavour new for my palette, and some I expect at some point.
April 2021 - Guava

Guava is butter baker's first soft-serve flavour to kick of the season. I didn't expect this flavour at all, but I heard good reviews from my IG colleagues. Guava is one of the tropical fruits I've always had a love-hate relationship especially, growing up. In the Philippines, guavas are being grown. I remember people pick them off the plant and have them as a snack. To me, it's the flavour that keeps me away from trying this fruit. However, I was curious how this shop would execute this. The first impression is the perfect swirl and light pink colour to go along with their vanilla swirl. The guava has a nice tart flavour with a bit of sweetness. It was a delicious spring ice cream flavour. I want to point out that when you order their soft serve, you get a choice of either the seasonal flavour or a swirl that's always with vanilla. Also, you can have it with their homemade waffle cone or cup.

May 2021 - Strawberry

Next month's flavour of the month, Strawberry; Reminiscing and in 2018, this flavour was my introduction to Butter Baker and its soft-serve ice cream. I'd say earlier this place was at the bottom of my list for ice cream. They're just so many ice cream places in the summer from Booyah, Tsujiri, Kekou and Milkcow. Since last year, I anticipate and look forward to the next month's flavour or every time I'm in Downtown Toronto. I need to make an appearance. As always, a perfect swirl with a mix of strawberry and vanilla. The ice cream was not sweet with a smooth texture. It is me or, does this soft serve cools you at any time of the day? I love how Butter baker adds a small item to top off the ice cream. For this month, they add a dried strawberry that has a marshmallow consistency.

June 2021 - Mango

Mango! One of my favourite fruits, but also my favourite butter baker soft-serve item. Mango is such a versatile fruit that you can create so many dessert dishes. From Mango stick rice, cheesecake, and notably ice cream, the options are endless. Writing about this, I remember back in 2020 during a food haul when Ontario was still on lockdown; I wrote to one of good IG friend what items I have collected. She told me mango was a flavour of the month for butter baker. I had to run to the store, and ever since, I await forward to this flavour to be available. Just a perfect mango puree taste that is not overly sweet. This year I had to buy a pint and enjoy the month of June devouring Mango Ice Cream. This month I decided no swirl with my cone that I was indifferent about this decision. Something was missing. The pure mango was delicious but wasn't the same in other months.
Delicious Score: 9.8 / 10 😋
July 2021 - Passionfruit

I don't know why every time I think Passionfruit, I refer to the drake song. July was a busy month for me with various social items that I almost broke this streak. Good thing Butter baker has two locations, the Downtown and Markham location that open earlier than the other. I had this flavour for breakfast, an idea I got from one of my IG friends I recently met this year. In my opinion, this flavour has a lot of tart in taste but cannot forget the perfect swirl. The soft serve has a fresh mint they put on top and brings another layer of flavour once you bite into it. I would say this isn't one of my favourites out of them all.
Delicious Score: 9.2 /10 😋
August 2021 - Blueberry

Blueberry is the flavour of the month for August. Coming back from Montreal, I was worried about the last-minute visit for this August's seasonal flavour. Luckily, I was in the office this month. I had to do the usual routine, which is ramen for lunch and then Butter baker for dessert to cap off the lunch break. Looking at what I posted, I feel that the company made some changes from last year. The consistency is very different and doesn't have the blueberry toppings I would expect. The colour is also a more deep red colour that you can compare to the top photo above. Overall this was a refreshing dessert that took me 30 seconds to devour. The flavour doesn't have that blueberry taste but is smooth with a bittersweet flavour. As you notice, I switched back to the regular swirl with the vanilla that makes it aesthetically pleasing for everyone.
Delicious Score: 9.0 / 10 😋
September 2021 - Raspberry

Initially, Butterbaker had Cantaloupe as the featured flavour for September. Due to supply issues, I was unable to try this flavour. The shop pivoted as switched to raspberry as the seasonal flavour of the month. I was very excited about the Cantaloupe as I love melons but would settle for the alternative. An interesting fact of this swirl is that they used vanilla yogurt to pair with their raspberry. As usual, the ice cream has a very smooth texture with a perfect swirl for the gram. The taste had a sharp taste of the raspberry that overpower that vanilla yogurt. In my opinion, it's very acidic than sweet in terms of taste but, vanilla yogurt might contribute to this. Topped-off with little fluffy marshmallows. Overall, this was a missed flavour for me.
Delicious Score: 7.0 / 10 😋
October 2021 - Chocolate / Coffee

Here we are the final flavour to end the soft-serve butter baker season. On their Instagram post, they have announced Caramel and Mocha. When I got into the shop, Coffee and Chocolate were the flavours available offered instead. As this is the final flavour of the season, I went big and ordered the Smore's sundae. This cup of goodness contains a swirl of chocolate and coffee ice cream with waffle flakes, a drizzle of caramel sauce. They top off with a torched marshmallow. The first impression is this feels like an ice cream you would have while camping. The waffle flakes add a layer of crunch, while the caramel sauce is non-existent due to the bold flavours of the primary ice cream flavours. You will taste that strong caffeine kick on your first bite while the cocoa creeps in as an aftertaste. Crazy to think but, this ice cream reminds me of the soft serve I had at Momofuku back in 2019.
Delicious Score: 9.6 / 10 😋
Crazy to think it's October but, it's also the end of soft-serve butter baker season. It was a fun adventure exploring what flavours they available every month. Surprisingly Black Cherry or Salted Caramel was not part of this season's featured flavours. Maybe this will become an ongoing summer adventure, but I look forward to next year's featured flavours.
